Paris: The United States will withdraw from efforts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine if it does not see signs of progress within days, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Friday.

“We're not going to continue with this endeavor for weeks and months on end,” Rubio said following a trilateral meeting on Ukraine hosted by France. “We need to determine very quickly now—I'm talking about a matter of days—whether or not this is doable in the next few weeks. If it is, we're in. If it's not, then we have other priorities to focus on as well.”

This marks the first time the U.S., Ukraine, and European representatives have sat together at the negotiation table since President Donald Trump began his second term in January. Trump has pushed for a rapid resolution to the ongoing war but has so far made little headway.

As part of earlier efforts, Trump proposed a 30-day moratorium on attacks targeting energy infrastructure, which both Kyiv and Moscow agreed to on March 18. However, on Friday, Russia accused Ukrainian forces of continuing to strike energy facilities across 15 Russian regions, casting doubt on the ceasefire’s effectiveness.

The Biden administration had focused on military aid and sanctions during its tenure, but Trump's administration has prioritized high-stakes diplomacy with a fast-track peace proposal.
